Internet e le comunitŕ islamiche in Italia
  Autor: d'Urbano, Paolo

Internet in a Sectarian Islamic Context
  Autor: Pierret, Thomas
Publicado en: ISIM

"The Lebanon-based al-Ahbash movement advocates a radical neo-traditionalist version of Sunni Islam. Although numerically modest, it has established branches in several Western countries, where it continues the campaign it started in the Middle East against the Salafi trend. The movement uses the Internet innovatively and demonstrates that the strategic use of web-based interactive communication tools does not necessarily lead to the reinforcement of a culture of dialogue; on the contrary they can also serve as a means to achieve virtual ideological hegemony."

Internet in the Arab World: A Step Towards
  Autor: Kirchner, Henner
Publicado en: Medienforschung am Deutschen Orient-Institut

"Many of the problems connected with the north-south differential in information technology are apparent in the Arab region. However, the level of development cannot be assumed to be homogeneous, as individual countries differ greatly in educational standards, financial strength, and willingness to innovate. The level of political acceptance of the new medium also varies. As a result, some relatively wealthy countries with a large high-tech potential only have a few Internet ports, whereas the number of users is growing much faster in other, structurally weaker countries."

  Islam and Muslims in Cyberspace
  Autor: Yusuf, Dalia

"An initial study of Islam and Muslim environments in cyberspace proves that there is a great chance for representing Islam and Muslims.

Using the Internet as an alternative and interpersonal form of communication may help to break the traditional cycle of stereotyping among Muslims themselves and between Muslims and others. A more profound and deliberate study may lead us to recognize the possibility of reunderstanding and rediscovering not only the other but also Muslim self-understanding."

  Islam and the Internet
  Autor: Adamu, Abdalla Uba

"There are, of course, pitfalls even to the liberal use of the internet to spread Islam. In the first instance, like all mass media, the information given on any web page is dependent upon the particular ideological leanings of the person providing the information. And where there could be common meanings and adherence to basic practices and beliefs, there are regional variations in other practices and beliefs. Some authors may not make these distinctions, and this can often cast doubt on the credibility of the information, especially if there are too many variations of the same views."

Iran)."

Islam, Community, and the Internet: New possibilities in the digital age
  Autor: Wheeler, Deborah

"This essay uses three examples of Muslim cyberpractices as a means for understanding how the Internet enables the formation, maintenance, and management of certain kinds of Islamic communities. First is the case of the al-Qaeda movement and its critics. Case two is an Ask the Imam web site, where postings on cyberdating are analyzed as a means to define proper Muslim behavior in cyberspace."

  Muslim Communities in German Webspace
  Autor: varios

Amin Azimi/Matthias Brückner

"There are a great number of German websites dedicated to every aspect of Islamic life, ranging from halal meat (meat that has been butchered according Islamic laws and contains no pork) to the announcement of prayer times. This abundance makes it impossible to deliver a complete analysis of all sites. The Muslim community in Germany mainly consists of Turks. Beside the Turks, there are other ethnic groups belonging to the Sunni branch of Islam. The Bosnian, Albanian, Maroccan, Tunesian, Pakistani and Afghan communities should be mentioned either. While most of the emigrants belong to the Sunni confession, there is a considerable number of Shii emigrants, too. Among these groups the Afghans and the Shii are very engaged in making use of the internet to promote their cause."

Muslim Networks, Muslim Selves in Cyberspace: Islam in the Post-Modern Public Sphere
  Autor: Anderson, Jon W

"This paper examines how Muslim presences have emerged on the Internet and the role of religion - specifically, Islam - in this sphere. The paper looks beyond demographic expansion to its more social characteristics. Three stages or phases of this emergence may be identified: much as technological adepts were followed by officializing strategies, those in turn have been overtaken and surpassed in using the Internet by activist but distinctly moderate Islam, for which the Internet seems peculiarly congenial."

The Internet and Identity in the Arab World
  Autor: Wheeler, Deborah L.

in New Network Theory. Amsterdam, June 28-30, 2007. Collected Abstracts & Papers, 279-296.

"In the Middle East, like all regions of the world, the Internet and its constituency evolve daily. In spite of this flux, key patterns in regional Internet culture are clearly visible, and it is these regional themes which form the foundation for this analysis of the Internet and Arab identity. The Arab world is a compelling field site for testing many of the competing explanation for the Internet's global diffusion and meaning. As discussed in more deta i l below, it is a middle ranked economic region; it is a place with one of the fastest Internet diffusion rates on the planet (2000-2007), and it is a region with a mostly literate population where computer literacy is often encouraged by state and society."

The Internet and Youth Subculture in Kuwait
  Autor: Wheeler, Deborah L.

"Young people in Kuwait constitute both the highest concentration of Internet users (estimated to be approximately 63% of all Internet users in Kuwait)and the largest sector of Kuwaiti society. Moreover, as argued in this article, young people's Internet practices are likely to stimulate the most significant changes in Kuwaiti society. This article scrutinizes a handful of descriptions by young Kuwaiti of the importance and implication of the Internet in their lives."

The Internet in Turkey and Pakistan: A Comparative Analysis
  Autor: Goodman, Seymour

"The current report applies the analytic framework to compare and contrast the Internet experiences of Turkey and Pakistan, through mid-2000. Although historically these countries have not been closely related, there are significant parallels between the two that make them well suited for a comparative study of the absorption of the Internet. Turkey and Pakistan are among the largest non-Arab Muslim countries in the world. In contrast to most of their Arab counterparts, their governments were founded as secular, parliamentary democracies. Both countries have had stormy political histories, however, with periodic coups and authoritarian governments. Each country has firmly entrenched bureaucracies with closed and, to varying degrees, corrupt processes."

Young Muslims and Muslim Media in Britain
  Autor: Tahira Ahmed, Sameera

"By examining how a selected group of young Muslims in Britain are using and thinking about media, this paper examines the role of community media as a vehicle for change and development amongst a religious and ethnic minority in European society. It will be suggested that expanding the definition of media to include more than just press and electronic communication enables us to gain a better understanding of how young Muslims are expressing themselves, creating new cultural spaces and developing collective identities.

This paper consists of three sections; the first presents a brief history and current overview of Muslim publications in Britain (selected newspapers and magazines); the second focuses on the presence of Muslims in cyberspace and the third examines how various forms of expression are influencing what it means to be a young Muslim in Britain through social, cultural and educational practices (using two examples of new Muslim organisations)."
