Das Orient-Journal konzentriert sich auf Problemstellungen im Kulturdialog zwischen dem Westen und der islamisch geprägten Welt.
Dass dieser nicht einfach ist, wird nicht nur vor dem Hintergrund der Geschichte verständlich gemacht. Auch die Religionen tragen ihr Scherflein zur Komplizierung bei: Der Anspruch, "allein selig zu machen" ist auf beiden Seiten nicht ganz überwunden.
Dass der Dialog gleichwohl eine ganz praktische Notwendigkeit hat, legt das Nebeneinander von Muslimen und Nichtmuslimen in Europa, gerade auch in Deutschland, nahe. Wenn der gesellschaftliche Friede erhalten werden soll, müssen sich beide Seiten auf das besinnen, was ihnen gemeinsam ist, und das Trennende hintanstellen. |

"Abû Bakr Mohammad ibn 'Abd al-Malik Ibn Tofayl nació en Guadix (Wâdî-Ash), en la provincia de Granada, en los primeros años del siglo XII de nuestra era. Fue un sabio enciclopédico, médico, matemático y astrónomo, filósofo y poeta.
La escenografía de su narración filosófica, digamos más exactamente de su «relato de iniciación», está constituida básicamente por dos islas, En una de ellas, el autor coloca una sociedad humana con sus leyes y sus convenciones; en la otra, un solitario, un hombre que ha alcanzado la plena madurez espiritual sin la ayuda de ningún maestro humano y al margen de toda relación social. Los hombres que integran la sociedad existente en la primera isla viven bajo la constricción de una Ley completamente exterior a ellos y de una religión cuyo modo de expresión se mantiene en el nivel del mundo sensible." |

"These ideas about an eternal Catholic-Spanish soul were applied to the African ventures of Spain in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Spanish colonialism in Africa, though limited, relied heavily on myths that had been perpetuated through history. The Reconquista, the American expansion, and even the 1936-1939 Civil War were read as religious wars to fight evil and bring the true light of Christianity to all peoples. At the same time, another set of myths was also incorporated into the colonial discourse: one that recognized the Muslim past of Spain and capitalized on European conceptions of Spain as part of the Orient. The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of different ideas of Spain on Spanish colonization in Africa during the twentieth century and the manipulative use of the past by Spanish colonizing authorities in Morocco and Equatorial Guinea." |
